Today was a trip south from my sisters place in Verwood to the Isle of Purbeck. The Isle of Purbeck is a peninsular that sits across the water from Bournemouth and Poole. The drive south didn’t take very long and this was followed by a quick car ferry across the mouth of Poole harbour and then on to the town of Swanage. On the way we took a walk to Old Harrys Rocks which had stunning views back to Bournemouth and i was assured that if the weather was nicer i would have been able to see the Isle of Wight.

In Swanage we stopped at a chocolate shop and brought some freshly made chocolates, yum yum. After a quick look around the town we headed along the peninsular to Corfe castle. Corfe castle appears as you drive along the valley and holds a dominant position in the countryside. The current castle was started by William the Conquerer shortly after 1066 and during the next 600 years was added to by numerous monarchs. However the present ruins were the result of the Parliamentary forces systematic destruction of the fortifications during the English Civil war in 1646. Its a shame that the castle had to suffer so, but its plight is not alone as many other building suffered in the same way. All the same the castle is still an imposing site and well worth a look.
