Today my sister and I went for a drive to explore Kidwelly castle and then on to the Gower peninsular. Kidwelly was magnificent with its almost complete battlements from which there were stunning views out over the medieval town below. The audio tour was very good and told not only the history of this 12th century castle but also explained the form and function of the miscellaneous bits of stonework we were looking at.

The Gower peninsular was very picturesque with views out over the ocean, some of the roads were a little interesting as well, though that may have had something to do with my navigating more then anything else. On the way we stopped a Weobley castle which is more of a fortified manor house then military stronghold, this was followed by probably the worst road we found, a small lane up and over a hill with a hedge row on either side close enough for the branches to scrape the wing mirrors of the car. Thank goodness we didn’t meet anything coming the other direction. Before leaving Gower we also went to Oxwich castle as well, this is the start of us using our Cadw 7 day explorer pass that allows us entry to a large number of castles and other monuments within wales.

On returning back to our cottage we went for a walk up to Dryslwyn castle which makes that four castles in one day, you can sing it as a variation to the Crowded house song “Four seasons in one day”.
